Ward No. 26, Kathmandu Metropolitan City Implements Advanced CCTV Surveillance System77 AI-enabled Ultra HD CCTVs installed in Balaju area

Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s Ward No. 26 has successfully installed 77 state-of-the-art CCTV cameras in the Balaju area, connected via fiber-optic internet, in collaboration with Nepal Telecom. The live feeds from these cameras are now accessible on monitors at the ward office, enhancing urban security and monitoring.

The system was inaugurated jointly by KMC Chief Administrative Officer Saroj Guragain, spokesperson Nabin Manandhar, and ward chair Khyam Raj Tiwari. The project represents an investment of approximately one crore rupees by the ward.

“This is likely the first time such a comprehensive surveillance system has been implemented in Nepal,” said Tiwari. “Our plan is to expand this system throughout the metropolis. A total of 200 cameras are planned for the ward, which will be installed in phases.”

The initiative also aims to build sustainable technological infrastructure and foster collaboration with security agencies to improve city safety, urban development, and management. A dedicated surveillance room is being constructed at Balaju Baisdhara Park to monitor camera footage, with similar systems already implemented or under planning in other wards.

According to Engineer Madhav Khanal, Information Technology Officer, the cameras feature Ultra HD 4K resolution, AI-powered sensors, and adhere to the ONVIF protocol. The system includes:

  • PTZ cameras capable of capturing clear footage up to 550 meters, even in low-light conditions.
  • Bullet cameras offering clear views up to 60 meters.
  • AI capabilities to detect and count vehicle number plates, recognize faces, track movement, and monitor environmental conditions.
  • Backup power to ensure uninterrupted operation.

Nepal Telecom’s deputy manager Nirmal Raj Chataut highlighted that connecting the cameras via underground fiber networks minimizes service disruptions and allows immediate troubleshooting.

This project is part of the metropolis’ “Metropolis Sees Watch” initiative, aiming to make Kathmandu a safer and smarter city through advanced surveillance technology.
